- What is Sterling Silver
- Sterling Silver is a metal comprised of at least 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloy including but not limited to, copper and nickel. The distributors we use find the best importers from a handful of countries and over 40 manufactures to offer the best jewelry sources guaranteed to be 92.5% sterling silver of the best quality. The sterling silver we offer has been plated with nickel or copper prior to applying the .999 silver plating. The plating methods used by the manufactures give the jewelry a longer, brighter life. Silver without adding the copper or nickel will not tarnish but is too soft to use in jewelry or giftware. Sterling silver will tarnish, this is not a defect but the result of a natural chemical process that occurs when sterling silver is exposed to chemicals in the air or elements such as wool, rubber bands and latex. Humidity also accelerates the tarnish.
- Caring for Sterling Silver. Avoid overexposing sterling silver to sunlight and harsh chemicals like chlorine, cosmetics, hair spray, perfume and perspiration. Keep items in sealed poly bags when not in use. Washing jewelry from time to time with mild dish shoap and warm water is a great way to prevent it from tarnishing but be sure to rinse well and dry the jewelry completely with a soft cloth. Tarnish is easier to remove at the beginning (generally a yellow tint) tarnish that has set in longer will be more difficult to remove as it turns brown and eventually black later requiring a professional cleaning with harsher chemicals that adds the chance of damaging your jewelry permanently. Toothpaste should never be used to clean sterling silver, many cleaning brands contain baking soda and other ingredients that may be to harsh on your sterling silver.
